RADIOTHERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER COULD CAUSE OTHER TUMORS

LA RADIOTERAPIA PARA EL CÁNCER DE PRÓSTATA PODRÍA PROVOCAR OTROS TUMORES

In our country, more than 25,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year, the most prevalent type of tumor in the male population. A tumor whose treatment requires surgery or the administration of radiotherapy, very aggressive interventions associated with numerous side effects, case of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

It's more; As shown by the results of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto (Canada) and published in the journal "The BMJ", the use of radiotherapy in prostate cancer could increase the risk of developing secondary tumors in the bladder, the colon and the rectum.

As Robert Nam, director of the research explains, «our results could be especially important for a large proportion of patients in whom treatment is recommended and in which, according to the established guidelines of clinical practice, radiotherapy and surgery are presented as equally valid alternatives».
